WRITING VS ENJOYMENT – My Thoughts

Both of these are used by people as criteria which they rate anime on. But which of these is more important to a series. The answer may vary from person to person.

ENJOYMENT : The emotional impact that a series gives to the viewer, whether that be humour, wholesomeness, sadness, or hype.

WRITING : The critical quality of a series that could include the structure of a plot, development of the characters, symbolism and much more.

THERE IS NO RIGHT ANSWER

People have different taste due to the fact that what they look for in a series is different. While one may watch anime to enjoy themselves and have a good time, other may be invested in the critical side of things and enjoy breaking down the plot.

The main problem with most people’s take on this dilemma is the fact that they focus too much on one aspect, causing them to completely disregard with the other. I think that is rather unfair, especially when it comes to series’ that were written to express the total opposite of that.

For something like Dragon Maid or Chuunibyou, you can’t use writing to rate the anime since it was made with the goal to be an enjoyable show and much emphasis wasn’t put on the writing, characters or plot depth.

On the contrary, same thing could go the other way around. Anime like Neon Genesis Evangelion were written with no intention of being enjoyable. They focus more on the writing and tackle themes like depression, anxiety, etc.

Ultimately there are plenty of shows that manage to do both like Gintama, Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen, etc. These anime have great writing and still manage to keep the viewer entertained with hilarious comedy or breathtaking action. That’s why they’re most loved.

WHICH IS MORE IMPORTANT

Well, neither. Things only hold value if we decide to give it to them. In the instance, enjoyment is not important if it isn’t what the viewer is looking for and same goes for the writing.
