THE SHOUNEN JUMP’S ‘DARK TRINITY’ – Let’s Talk

THE BIG THREE

I’m sure a lot of you would already be aware of the term “Big Three”, used to refer to the trio of One Piece, Naruto and Bleach. The reasoning behind this title was the fact that when it came to worldwide popularity and sales, no other Shounen jump title even came close during their peak.

A new term similar to the “Big Three” is slowly getting traction in the anime community.

Dark Trio, Unholy Trinity or Dark Trinity – There are multiple ways people refer to this trio of modern Shounen Jump manga all of which debuted in 2018 and have adopted a dark approach to their story telling.

JUJUTSU KAISEN

What started off as just another Shounen has slowly grown into its own as chapters passed. Sudden and horrifying deaths, gruesome cursed techniques and mature themes, JJK keeps pushing the boundaries of what is considered Shounen.

CHAINSAW MAN

Chainsaw Man is just WILD! Starting from the concept to how the story is executed to just how crazy each and every character feels. The plot seems like something that’d never work and yet it does. With unreal amounts of gore and the way it handles the sexual themes, CSM really feels out of place as compared to other jump titles.

HELL’S PARADISE

Perhaps the most underrated out of the three, Hell’s Paradise sat comfortably as the Jump+ platform’s “flagship” manga. Away from all kinds of restrictions, HP let’s loose to tell a story filled with horror, nudity and gore. The horror and the artstyle especially stands out.
