HOW ANIME IS MADE – A Brief Overview

This post contains HUGE amount of knowledge. Though I’ve tried to simplify it as much as I could. Producing anime takes a lot of time and effort. BE THANKFUL !

PRE – PRODUCTION

Before the production can even begin, a lot of things need to be finalised. Failure to do so may end up in the anime production not getting greenlit at all.

One of the key decisions is Budget Allocation. Producers start looking for sponsors and depending on whom they land, final budget is set.

Only about half the entire budget goes into animation. The rest goes to broadcasting and distributing companies.

Some other things finalized during this phase are – Animation Studio, Investors, Distributors, TV Broadcasters, Merchandising Rights.

PRODUCTION

SCRIPT WRITING : This is the very first stage. The time taken can depend on whether the anime is being adapted from a manga, light novel, visual novel, or is original.

STORYBOARDING : These are rough drawings of how the scenes should play out. Generally done by the episode director himself.

LAYOUTS : They are a more polished version of each shot with basic bg art added as well as shading to differentiate the characters from the background.

KEY ANIMATIONS : These are drawn by animation director and his team. These are the essential shots of the character during extreme moments of his motion.

IN-BETWEEN ANIMATION : This part is largely outsourced to freelancers or other small studios. Drawn to make the movement between 2 key-frames as smooth as possible.

COMPOSITING : Once all key-frames are ready, they are assembled, digitised and then coloured. Effects like lightning, blur, etc are also added. Length of the episode is also trimmed.

POST – PRODUCTION

Everything after the editing process comes under the post production. This includes voice acting, subtitling, composing music, etc. Once these edits are made, the anime gets ready for broadcast.

And it takes only 1 second to say “this anime is trash”. Atleast respect the creators/studios instead of giving them hate and death threats.
