THE DIFFERENT FACES OF KANEKI KEN

BLACK HAIRED KANEKI

The Kaneki we are introduced to. As well as the one that becomes a Half-Ghoul. This Kaneki oozes the shy guy persona. Soft-spoken, meek, as well as incredibly antisocial. While people might think of him as the original Kaneki, that isn’t the case.

Turns out he had to face domestic abuse at the hands of his mother. The kind hearted Kaneki we get to know is based on the imaginary version of his mother. It’s a persona that he created to run away from the actual truth.

WHITE HAIRED KANEKI

Having been tortured for days by Jason, Kaneki realised there was no way for him to escape unless he accepted who he was. Who he had become. Up until that point, he had actively refused to accept that he was indeed a Ghoul.

While he still deeply cared for people around him, he realised he had to get stronger to protect those close to him. That desire for power led to his gradual mental degradation.

SASAKI HAISE

Of all the different personas Kaneki had, Haise was probably the one that can truly be considered as a case of Multiple Personality Disorder. After losing to Arima and subsequently getting “killed”, Kaneki forgets about his past and takes on the name of Sasaki Haise working as a Ghoul Investigator under Arima and Akira while mentoring a young group of Quinxes.

We get to see Kaneki’s trademark kindness and soft-spoken attitude in Haise. His past would eventually try to catch up to him with several instances of a kid Kaneki asking Haise to not forget his past.

Stay tuned for the next part as I’m gonna talk about the remaining three faces of Kaneki Ken, one of the best written protagonist of all time.
